Oil & Gas Data Management Services
Oil and Gas Exploration and Production (E&P) is one of the most information-intensive global industries. Exploration Managers make multi-million Dollar decisions every day that hinge on the quality of geological and geophysical data at their disposal. Kestrel IDM has particular expertise managing upstream geotechnical data. In fact this is Kestrel IDM’s heritage, having served the oil sector for over 40 years.
Tape Transcription & Data Recovery
Kestrel IDM have helped numerous oil and gas companies maintain thousands of terrabytes of valuable and irreplaceable geotechnical data (geophysical, geological and navigation) by transcribing it to high density modern media types, all the while applying rigorous quality control and data verification procedures.
As technology improves over time, digital media becomes obsolete and hardware evolves. Many media forms have been popular at different times since the early days of seismic surveying and well logging, and Kestrel IDM is proud to able to read practically every medium and format known to the industry.
Our capabilities include all vintages and versions of 3480, 3590, 3592, LTO, DLT, 8mm and Exabyte cartridges, and all common forms of CD and DVD optical disks. Kestrel IDM has also retained the capability to read and recover data that was recorded on 21 track and 9-track round-reel tapes commonly used from the 1960’s until the late 1980’s.
A common issue with magnetic tape is the risk of the media degrading over time, especially when storage conditions have been sub-optimal. As the media degrades it can be affected by stiction (“sticky tapes”) which can result in the oxide layer of the tape being lost, along with any data. Kestrel IDM employs a number of specialist techniques to minimise the risk of data loss, and maximise data recovery.
Quality Control & Data Verification
All outputs are rigorously checked for completeness, accuracy and data integrity by our highly experienced geotechnical staff. QC processes include cross-checking with original input media, acquisition and processing support records (eg: Observer Logs and Field Reports), and visual plotting and inspection of results.
Geotechnical Data Management
Geotechnical data is unique in its variety and scope. Kestrel IDM have the required geotechnical knowledge and understanding to accurately index and audit this data into database systems that allow rapid access to quality-assured data when required. Our experience ranges from inhouse support of 3rd-party and proprietary database systems, to loading cloud-based National Data Repository solutions (NDR). Where digital data is required, but only hardcopy is available, Kestrel IDM is able to digitise hardcopy formats, such as Shotpoint Location maps, Seismic Sections and Well Logs. We can also vectorise Well Log curves and Seismic traces and output to industry standard SEG-P1/UKOOA, LIS/LAS and SEGY (SEG Y, SEG-Y) formats allowing the digital data to be uploaded to workstations for further interpretation.
